An Albanian prisoner in Australia has escaped while being allowed to attend his brother’s funeral in Melbourne.
Orijol Rukaj has been on the run for six weeks after escaping from the officers who were escorting him.
Police said that there were many people at the funeral, who had gathered to say goodbye to the Albanian’s brother.
Rukaj was escorted by prison staff, but never returned to his cell.
The 47-year-old is accused of drug trafficking and Victoria police say he has links to the Albanian mafia.
Police said they questioned Rukaj’s associates and family members at 20 addresses around Melbourne on Tuesday.
They believe the 47-year-old is still within the Melbourne metropolitan area.
Police said they have identified several people they believe helped Rukaj plan his escape, but they are currently abroad.
One of these people was arrested at Melbourne Airport, but has since been released without charge.
