The European Parliament today approved an amendment calling on the authorities of North Macedonia to resolve as soon as possible the issue of using the Albanian language in state exams.
It emphasizes that the practical implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement must be guaranteed not only in law, but also in spirit.
The amendment criticizes the way the student protests have been presented, emphasizing that they should not be interpreted as politically motivated or a destabilizing factor, but as a legitimate demand for linguistic and educational rights.
“Calls on the authorities of North Macedonia to resolve as soon as possible the issue of the use of the Albanian language in state exams, to ensure the practical implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement both in law and in spirit, and not to misrepresent the student protests as politically motivated or as a destabilizing factor,” the amendment states.
We recall that students in North Macedonia held successive protests demanding their legitimate right to have the bar exam conducted in Albanian. This right is guaranteed by international laws and standards, because language is the foundation of national identity and dignity.
