Who is the new US ambassador to Tirana? Here’s what he said about Skanderbeg and Albanians

Albania will soon have a new American ambassador in Tirana. The United States Senate has officially confirmed Eric Wendt as the US ambassador to Tirana, ending the process of his nomination and approval in American institutions.

In the Senate session, Wendt’s candidacy received 51 votes in favor and 47 against, securing the majority needed for the final appointment. The vote came after his candidacy had previously passed the filter of the relevant Senate committee.

With this decision, Eric Wendt is expected to take up his post in Albania in the coming days, replacing the American diplomatic representation in Tirana at a period considered important for relations between the two countries.

Wendt does not come from traditional diplomacy. He has a long career in the US military and security structures, where he served for more than three decades. His name was proposed by President Donald Trump, while the White House presented him as a candidate for the post of US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Albania.

During his career, Wendt has held several important positions in the US armed forces. He served as the fifth commander of NATO Special Operations Headquarters until January 2021, and previously served as the US Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority. He has also led the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, as well as US special operations in South Korea.

At the Senate hearing, Wendt presented the priorities he intends to pursue in relations with Albania. He described our country as an important strategic partner in NATO and recalled his cooperation with Albanian soldiers during international missions.

‘While leading NATO forces, Albanian troops were part of my command and I worked with them in the field. In Afghanistan, I served with Albanian troops. I found that Albanian special forces embody the fighting spirit of the Albanian hero Skanderbeg,’ he declared.

Wendt said that security, defense, economic development, and strengthening the functioning of the US embassy in Tirana will be the main priorities of his mandate.

He also emphasized the importance of the fight against corruption, organized crime, and international drug trafficking, underlining that cooperation between Albania and the US in these areas should be further strengthened.

An important part of his statements was related to SPAK, which he praised as an independent and successful institution.

‘SPAK, from everything I have read, has been an apolitical, independent and successful organization,’ he said, adding that the work of this institution is important for strengthening the rule of law and improving the business climate.

Wendt also spoke in favor of supporting Albania in meeting NATO objectives, including gradually increasing defense spending and strengthening cybersecurity.

With confirmation by the Senate, Eric Wendt officially becomes the new United States ambassador to Albania, bringing to Tirana a profile formed mainly in the military and security field, with long experience in American structures and the NATO alliance.
