A uniformed soldier was standing at the counter at a Taco Bell restaurant , ready to order his dinner, when he suddenly stopped. He overheard the conversation between two young boys and knew he had to do something.
What happened next was recorded by another customer and touched thousands of people online.
US Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Risdon had walked into a Taco Bell in Mobile, Alabama to eat dinner, unaware that someone was watching him.
A customer named Jason Gibson , who was eating nearby, noticed the soldier and two young boys moving around the restaurant.
The boys, aged 9 and 13 , were trying to sell homemade cakes to raise money for their church.
When the soldier heard what they were doing, he didn’t ignore them.
He noticed that the boys looked wet, cold, and it was getting late. Instead of simply telling them “no” because he didn’t have any money with him, he asked them a question:
“Have you had dinner?”
The answer was: no.
At that moment, the soldier called the two boys to the counter and told them to order whatever they wanted.
He would pay for dinner.
The boys were filled with joy. With big smiles on their faces, they waited for the hot food that a stranger was buying them.
Jason Gibson, moved by what he was seeing, took out his phone and began recording the moment.
He later posted the video, writing:
“I was at Taco Bell when two kids came in selling candy. I heard a soldier ask them if they were hungry and tell them to come with him to the counter because he was going to buy them dinner. I had to record it and share it.”
In addition to food and drinks, Robert spent time talking to the boys and treating them with respect.
The video quickly spread on social media and many people began praising his action.
It was later learned that Robert Risdon was a member of the US Army Rangers and a father of two.
He said that for him the decision was very simple:
“They were cold, wet and hungry. They were very kind and smart children. It was the least I could do.”
When people started calling him a hero, he said he felt embarrassed by all the attention.
According to him, good deeds happen every day.
He said part of his confidence came from the Ranger soldiers’ motto:
“I will never abandon my friends.”
And for that moment, he saw those two children as people who needed help.
Jason said the most touching moment was when the youngest son told the soldier:
“When I grow up, I want to be like you.”
A small gesture for Robert was simply buying a dinner, but for those two boys it became a memory they can carry for a lifetime.
