The Albanian Railways has launched public consultations for the rehabilitation and electrification of the Durrës–Rrogozhinë railway line, a 33-kilometer project part of the Pan-European Corridor VIII. The investment aims to modernize the infrastructure and increase the safety, speed and quality of rail transport.
Albanian Railways has announced the launch of the public consultation for the rehabilitation and electrification project of the Durrës-Rrogozhinë railway line, an investment that aims to modernize one of the most important segments of the railway network in the country.
The process is being developed within the framework of the preparation of environmental and social documentation, while the project affects the territory of the municipalities of Durrës, Kavajë and Rrogozhinë.
According to the published documentation, the project envisages the reconstruction, modernization and electrification of about 33 kilometers of railway line, from Shkozet to the Rrogozhina station.
Interventions will include the replacement of rails and sleepers, the rehabilitation of bridges, the improvement of the drainage system, the expansion of the Rrogozhina tunnel, as well as the installation of new signaling and telecommunication systems.
The project also foresees the closure of informal crossings, the construction of underpasses and overpasses in high-traffic areas, and the full electrification of the line.
This will enable the circulation of electric trains and increase the speed, safety and quality of passenger and freight transport.
This investment is part of the Pan-European Corridor VIII and is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank and the European Union, with the aim of integrating the Albanian railway network with the Trans-European Transport Network.
The Durrës–Rrogozhinë railway line was built in the period 1947–1950 and is considered one of the oldest segments of the Albanian railway network, which has suffered from a lack of investment and maintenance for decades.
