A cemetery in Lezha will cost 25 thousand lek (new). The decision has been approved by the Municipal Council and is expected to enter into force after receiving the approval of the prefect.
With this decision, there will no longer be burials in public cemeteries without permission from the Municipality. Family members will have to present the death certificate to the administrative units to obtain authorization and make the appropriate payment.
Families in need will be exempted from the fee. The grave site will no longer be chosen according to preferences but will be assigned by the Municipality, according to the plan for free spaces. Every burial will be registered in the electronic registry, while exhumations will be allowed only in cases provided for by law.
Likewise, the construction of family graves, the placement of monuments or any other intervention in cemeteries will be done with special permission.
According to Mayor Pjerin Ndreu, the regulation aims to put an end to the abuses observed over the years with the allocation and sale of grave spaces.
“We will do a full identification. If family graves were made before this draft decision, those people must prove that they are needed for family needs, but if that burial site is sold for 4 thousand euros on the black market, this will no longer be tolerated by the municipality,” said Ndreu.
