500 thousand euros in cash headed to Tirana, Macedonian Customs ‘does something’ to the Albanian driver

North Macedonian customs have seized 500,000 euros hidden in a bunker inside a minibus at the “Tabanoc” border crossing.

The money was discovered during a search of a vehicle coming from Albania. The driver of the minibus, Albanian citizen XH.G., is being prosecuted and the vehicle has been confiscated.

“The Control and Investigations Sector, through the Operational Affairs Department, has prevented an attempt to illegally transfer cash in the amount of half a million euros, which were discovered in a specially built bunker inside a minibus, resulting in the largest seizure to date in the history of the Customs Administration of the Republic of Macedonia.”

The money and the vehicle have been seized, while the perpetrator, a citizen of the Republic of Albania with the initials XH.G., who was driving the minibus, is being prosecuted in accordance with the law, for which the Basic Court in Kumanovo has already issued a verdict.

The attempt was discovered during an operation by the Operational Department at the entrance to the “Tabanoc” State Border Point, where a detailed check was carried out on a minibus owned by a travel agency from Albania, which was transporting seven passengers,” said Boban Nikollovski, director of the Customs of North Macedonia.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Customs, Mustafa Dauti, announced that the Control and Investigations Sector, through the Department for Operational Work, has prevented an attempt to illegally transfer cash worth around half a million euros, hidden in a specially built bunker in a minibus that was crossing the border between Serbia and Macedonia.

According to Dauti, this is one of the largest historical confiscations.

He announced that the person with the initials Xh.G., a citizen of the Republic of Albania and the driver of the minibus, has been prosecuted and a verdict has already been issued against him by the Basic Court of Kumanovo.

“The attempt was discovered in an action by the Department for Operational Work at the entrance to the country, at the Tabanovec border crossing, where a detailed inspection of a minibus owned by a tourist agency from Albania, which was transporting seven passengers, was carried out,” the statement said.
