A 62-year-old woman from Argentina has become a mother for the first time, giving birth to her son in a hospital in the province of Buenos Aires.
Mabel Frias gave birth on August 12 at the San Felipe Hospital in the city of San Nicolás. Her son, David, was born by cesarean section and weighed 2.75 kilograms. According to the mother, the baby is in good health, although he spent several hours in neonatal intensive care after birth.
Frias had been in menopause for years, while the pregnancy was achieved through in vitro fertilization with donated eggs. “I always wanted to become a mother. I never gave up,” the 62-year-old told Argentine media, indicating that she had decided to undergo treatment to fulfill her long-standing desire.
Due to her age, the pregnancy was considered high-risk, but obstetrician Romina Ruffini, who followed her throughout the pregnancy, said it progressed without complications.
After giving birth, Frias urged women who are in menopause and want to become mothers not to give up on their dream.
“Don’t give up. Menopause is no longer an obstacle. Science has made a lot of progress,” she said.
Argentine media reports that there are no official data on the oldest age at which a woman has become a mother in Argentina. Meanwhile, in other countries, cases of births at even older ages through assisted reproduction have been recorded.
Among the well-known cases are Romanian Adriana Iliescu, who became a mother at the age of 66 in 2005, and Spaniard Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, who gave birth to twins shortly before turning 67.
