LATEST/ GJKKO sentences former mayor to prison

The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime has found the former acting mayor of Tropoja Municipality, Zyra Islamaj, guilty of the criminal offense of passive corruption.

According to the decision of the GJKKO, Islamaj was sentenced to 2 years and 1 month in prison, but the sentence was suspended and replaced with 2 years of probation, on condition that during this time he does not commit another criminal offense. The court also banned him from exercising public functions for 5 years.

In the same trial, builder Rrok Gega was also convicted of active corruption. He received a 6-month prison sentence, which was also suspended and converted into 1 year of probation.

Investigations by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime raised suspicions that Zyra Islamaj had asked the builder to build a bridge near her sister’s apartment, although this intervention was not part of the initial project.

According to the prosecution, the former official is suspected of having exerted influence over the builder and had also involved the municipality’s road maintenance technician in carrying out the works./Top Channel
