A series of seven earthquakes struck the province of Granada in Spain on Tuesday, forcing authorities to evacuate shopping malls, hotels and other buildings as a precaution.
According to the newspaper “El Mundo”, the strongest earthquake reached a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale and had its epicenter in the city of Gohar, near the area that was also hit on Saturday by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Several strong aftershocks were recorded after the main tremor, while Andalusian authorities announced that a total of seven consecutive earthquakes were recorded, four of them with a magnitude above 4.0.
Due to the seismic activity, the Andalusian Health Service decided to temporarily suspend some services in health centers in the province of Granada. Medical visits and scheduled surgeries were postponed, while emergency and oncology services continued to operate normally.
According to regional authorities, three people were slightly injured, including a minor who was taken to hospital. The injuries were caused by falling parts of buildings after the tremors. Emergency services reported receiving more than 500 calls from citizens after the earthquake.
These tremors come after a week of increased seismic activity in the Vega de Granada area and the southern part of the metropolitan region.
According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), more than 30 earthquakes were recorded in the area last week, although most were of low magnitude.
