“The IBAR report was held in suspense for 2 months”/ Mazi reveals the behind-the-scenes in Brussels: Justice and the “Beleri” case divide EU countries

Albania’s former chief negotiator for the European Union, Zef Mazi, was in a live broadcast for Ora News, where he spoke about the delay in the enlargement report and the debates taking place within EU member states about Albania’s progress in the integration process.

According to Mazi, the fact that the report took two months from the first draft to approval clearly shows that within the union there were divisions and reservations on several issues related to Albania.

“There are states that have been in favor of early approval, but there are also other states that have asked many questions and have requested specific clarifications from the commissioner,” he said.

He said that many member states are viewing Albania’s progress from their own national interests and perspectives, leading to a lack of unified stance on some key reforms.

In his analysis, justice and the judiciary remain among the most sensitive topics for the European Union, while political developments are also being followed with close attention by European capitals.

Mazi also focused on the “Beleri” issue, which he said has been discussed in strong tones by several member states and continues to remain an open issue in relations between Albania and the EU.

“There have been states that have held the view that if integration continues to fail to move forward at the right pace, the process could reach a strategic crossroads in credibility,” Mazi said.

According to the former chief negotiator, this situation is raising questions about the European Union’s own credibility towards the Western Balkan countries, at a time when the enlargement process is considered crucial for the future of the region.
