An Austrian tour bus carrying high school students from Germany collided with a delivery van in the eastern Netherlands this morning, injuring about 20 people, eight of whom were taken to hospital, Dutch police said.
“Some of the injured who have been taken to hospital are in serious condition,” police in the province of Gelderland said in a post on X. Others have minor injuries.
The accident happened around 4 a.m. on the A28 highway near the town of Weeze, which is located about 100 kilometers east of Amsterdam.
According to a police spokesman, more than 50 people were on the bus. Among the injured is the driver of the delivery truck.
Following the accident, the A28 motorway was closed in both directions.
Photos released by police show firefighters helping students get out of the bus through its roof. Many of the bus passengers were injured by the vehicle’s shattered windows.
