The last phone call of Lorena Itzer, 46, has become one of the main pieces of evidence in the investigation of the serious incident in Florence, where she was murdered by her ex-partner, 36-year-old Federico Vela.
The woman called the emergency number 112 shortly after 2:00 PM, while locked in the trunk of her ex-partner’s car. The call lasted about 20 minutes and recorded the dramatic moments before the tragedy.
“My ex-boyfriend beat me and kidnapped me,” Lorena told police, explaining that Vela had attacked her in a garage and then put her in a vehicle, where he had tied her up. She tried to give officers as much information as possible about the perpetrator.
“It’s my ex, his name is Federico, he’s 36 years old. I was in the car for about ten minutes,” she said.
Despite the dire situation, the 46-year-old managed to remain calm. She told officers that she did not know where her ex-partner was taking her, but suspected he was heading towards his apartment in the Galluzzo neighborhood of Florence.
The call was having problems due to the vehicle moving on the A1 motorway. About eight minutes after the call started, the police realized that the situation was critical. Lorena’s phone was recording everything that was happening inside the car.
At one point, the vehicle stopped and the trunk was heard opening. The officers remained silent so that their presence would not be noticed.
Then Lorena’s voice was heard, addressing her ex-partner with the words: What are you doing? I love you, don’t worry, we will meet again.
Authorities believe these may have been the 46-year-old’s last attempts to calm Vela down and convince him not to kill her.
According to investigations, the 36-year-old had not accepted their separation and in recent weeks had pressured her through messages.
A few minutes after the call, Vela drove near a bridge over the A1 motorway, in Barberino del Mugello, and threw Lorena off the bridge.
About 40 minutes later, after negotiations with the police, the 36-year-old also ended his life by jumping from the same spot.
Lorena’s last phone call is now one of the most important elements of the investigative file, as it documented the dramatic minutes before the tragic end of the event.
