A surprise operation has been carried out at Durrës Prison, an institution that has been under “scrutiny” for weeks following a strict order issued by the General Directorate of Prisons.
The action was taken after a verbal conflict between two convicts sharing the same cell, which prompted security services to carry out immediate checks.
The checks were focused on the third floor, sector 1 of the institution, and during the cell checks, an iPhone mobile phone was seized, along with its charger.
According to information, it is suspected that the device belonged to the convict Elton Metaj. The case has been documented and is expected to be investigated to clarify how the phone entered the prison.
Sources close to law enforcement institutions indicate that checks in prisons will continue in the coming days, as part of measures to increase security and crack down on prohibited items within penitentiary institutions.

Elton Metaj has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-wife, Sabrina Bengaj, an event that shocked public opinion in September 2021.
According to the investigative file, the crime occurred on the evening of September 10, 2021, when Metaj went to his ex-wife’s parents’ apartment, armed with an automatic weapon. He opened fire on the 23-year-old, who was at home with her family.
Elton Metaj and Sabrina Bengaj were married in 2017 and had a daughter from this marriage. Their relationship ended in 2020, after, according to investigations, Sabrina left the apartment due to domestic violence, moving with the daughter to her parents’ house.
Even after the separation, Metaj continued to threaten his ex-wife. A year before the murder, he was arrested for allegedly threatening Sabrina Bengaj and her family with a gun. After this episode, the Fier Court issued a protection order in favor of the 23-year-old, with a deadline until October 14, 2021.
However, before the protection order expired, Metaj returned to Sabrina’s parents’ apartment, armed. According to the investigation, after the young woman asked him to go outside so as not to alarm her family, he shot her several times, causing her death.
