The US Senate has cleared the way for the final consideration of Eric Wendt’s candidacy for the post of US ambassador to Albania. The procedural resolution allowing a group vote on 74 US administration appointments was approved by 50 votes in favor and 47 against, while three senators abstained.
The decision does not yet constitute Wendt’s official confirmation as ambassador, but paves the way for the final vote in the Senate on the candidates proposed by the US administration.
Eric Wendt was nominated by President Donald Trump on April 13, 2026, and presented his priorities for the diplomatic mission in Albania before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
If confirmed by the Senate, Wendt will be the first US ambassador to Tirana after Yuri Kim leaves office in June 2023, ending a period of over three years where the US Embassy has been led by chargé d’affaires.
During his presentation, the ambassadorial candidate focused on four main areas of cooperation between the two countries: security, defense, economic development, and strengthening diplomatic capacities.
Wendt, a former soldier with over 34 years of experience in the US military and with commitments to NATO and international missions, praised Albania’s role as an important US ally.
In the field of security, it aims to support Albania’s efforts against corruption, organized crime and international drug trafficking. Another priority is to strengthen military cooperation and increase the country’s defense and cyber capabilities.
On the economic front, Wendt has focused on encouraging American investment in sectors such as technology, artificial intelligence, energy, infrastructure, and mining, seeking a more favorable climate for business.
During the hearing, he also recalled the cooperation with Albanian special forces within NATO and missions in Afghanistan, appreciating their contribution to international operations.
Eric Wendt’s confirmation is expected to be the final step towards the return of an ambassador-designate to head the American diplomatic mission in Albania, in a period where relations between the two countries focus on security, defense and strategic partnership.
