A portion of the suspended ceiling of the new Emergency Department (ED) at Corinth General Hospital collapsed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, fortunately without causing any injuries to patients or medical personnel. The incident caused alarm among employees and citizens, as the collapse occurred in an environment where dozens of people receive care every day.
The incident has received particular attention as it concerns a newly renovated facility. The project to improve the Emergency Department was inaugurated just a month ago by the Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, and was financed by the Recovery Fund, with a total value of 2.6 million euros, which also includes the Aigios hospital.
During the inauguration, Minister Georgiadis stated that the investment had increased the area of the Emergency Department from 500 to 650 square meters, added three intensive care beds and improved medical equipment.
Following the ceiling collapse, the Corinth Hospital Employees Union reacted strongly, raising concerns about the safety of patients and staff. Union board member Yiannis Frysiras criticized the quality of the interventions, stating that even a project presented as a major modernization failed to guarantee basic safety standards.
“The ribbons that the government, the Ministry and the administrations are cutting cannot hide the reality. Reality has fallen from the ceiling,” he said. Hospital employees demanded immediate intervention, more permanent staff, greater funding and improved health infrastructure. In the meantime, a technical verification is expected to determine the causes of the ceiling collapse.
