EU moves to reduce tariffs on US products, aiming to avoid a new trade war
The Eropean Union is considering reducing import tariffs on a range of American products in an effort to ease trade tensions with the United States.
The decision comes at a time when Donald Trump’s administration has warned of the possibility of increasing tariffs on European goods, increasing pressure on Brussels to finalize a trade deal with Washington.
According to reports, the EU is expected to implement the previously agreed agreement with the US, which aims to facilitate trade exchanges between the two parties. As part of it, the European Union will remove tariffs on some American industrial products, while some agricultural and marine products from the US are expected to benefit from more favorable access to the European market.
On the other hand, the US administration is expected to maintain tariffs at 15% on most products imported from Europe.
One of the most sensitive points of the negotiations remains the European auto industry. President Trump has previously warned that this sector could face higher tariffs.
European negotiators are expected to conduct the final phase of discussions on the agreement, before it is sent for consideration and vote to the European Parliament.
Meanwhile, European lawmakers are also considering the possibility of including a safeguard clause, which would allow the EU to suspend the agreement in the event of violations of the conditions by the American side.
Recent developments show that economic relations between Washington and Brussels continue to be sensitive, as both sides are trying to find a compromise to avoid a new escalation of the trade conflict.
