A massive egg recall has been registered in the US as officials investigate a salmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 100 people.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on August 12 reclassified the recall of nearly 1.6 million cage-raised white and brown eggs due to concerns that they may be contaminated with salmonella.
The recall is now designated as Class I, which the FDA defines as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that use of or exposure to an illicit product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
At least 98 people in 17 states have been sickened in the outbreak linked to eggs recalled from the market since July 24, with 26 people hospitalized. The illnesses were reported between November 21, 2025, and June 30, 2026.
