An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck Granada and its metropolitan area in Spain on Tuesday morning, causing panic among residents, three minor injuries and material damage.
The tremor was recorded at 10:37 local time, with an epicenter in the Gojar area and a focal depth of about five kilometers.
Tuesday’s earthquake is part of a seismic sequence that has been ongoing in the Granada area since last Saturday.
Andalusia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Sant, confirmed that three people were slightly injured as a result of the tremors.
Among the injured was a minor who was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
The earthquake also caused material damage in several areas. Images posted on social media showed damage to buildings, roads and parked vehicles.
Due to the tremors, the Alhambra was temporarily evacuated, while many citizens took to the streets for fear of further tremors.
At least six aftershocks were recorded after the main earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8.
The strongest of them had a magnitude of 4 and was recorded at 10:53, with its epicenter in Churriana de la Vega. According to the National Geographic Institute of Spain (IGN), the tremor was very shallow.
Then, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Pandul, a 2.6 magnitude tremor in the Las Gambas area, and another 2.8 magnitude with an epicenter in Alendín.
The main earthquake was felt in all four provinces of eastern Andalusia. Emergency services received around 50 calls to the 112 number, while authorities continue to monitor the situation due to seismic activity.
