A 45-year-old Albanian man, resident of San Giovanni in Marignano, Italy, has been arrested after allegedly attempting to kill his wife by driving her car into the sea at the port of Cattolica, in the province of Rimini, media reports.
According to preliminary investigations, the man had invited his wife, 44, to go out in the car under the pretext of going shopping. After they arrived at the port area, he allegedly suddenly accelerated and drove the vehicle towards the water. The car hit a pole and ended up in the sea, at a depth of about three meters.
The 45-year-old man managed to quickly get out of the vehicle and fled the scene, while the woman was trapped inside the car, which was filling with water. She managed to escape through the rear window, while several people in the port jumped into the water and helped the couple. The woman was taken to the Pesaro hospital for checks, while the man disappeared as soon as he was pulled out of the water.
After he left, the carabinieri began searching and found him during the evening near a wooded area, not far from his apartment.
According to Italian media, the day before the incident, police had gone to the couple’s home over a domestic dispute. The 45-year-old reacted with violence and threats to their intervention, slightly injuring two officers and damaging a service vehicle. He was arrested, and after being released the next day, he asked his wife to go shopping.
