Dorothy Boggess and Velma Long are both 109 years old and friends for more than eight decades.
Despite their age, they continue to be active and say that one of the main secrets to their longevity is their social life.
Reaching this age means becoming part of a very small group of people.
Only 0.03 percent of Americans live to be over 100 years old.
The two women met in Washington during World War II, when they worked for the US administration, WP reports.
Their spouses were cousins and close friends, and Dorothy and Velma formed a friendship that has lasted for more than 80 years.
Today they find it more difficult to meet often, but they communicate on the phone almost every day.
Boggess continues to start her morning with exercise and dancing in her kitchen.
She learned to swim at the age of 69, and has traveled to many countries throughout her life, from Argentina to Turkey.
Long also continues to go out, travel, and participate in activities with his family.
Her daughter recalls that on her 100th birthday, Long was still dancing in heels.
Both have been active in their communities, in church and in various social organizations.
They also take care of their diet and try to maintain physical activity.
But when asked about the secret to longevity, they single out relationships with people above all else.
According to them, friendship, family, activity, and a rich social life have played an important role in allowing them to continue enjoying life even at the age of 109.
They also highlight humor, travel, and community involvement as ways to maintain an active and rich life.
