The commemorative one-dollar coin with the portrait of Donald Trump, minted as part of the festive activities for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, has now been put on sale, according to AFP.
Those interested can purchase the coins in packs of 25 or 100, priced at $61 and $154, respectively. On one side, the collector’s coin features an eagle, the symbol of the United States, according to a document published by the Commission on Fine Arts.
The other side features a portrait of Donald Trump, an image that closely resembles his official portrait. This portrait was inspired by a photo of Trump taken by police as part of the investigation launched in Georgia into allegations of alleged interference in the 2020 presidential election.
The minting of this coin was approved in mid-March by the Commission on Fine Arts, all of whose members are appointed by Trump.
“As we approach the 250th anniversary (of independence), we are designing coins that symbolize the spirit of our country and our democracy,” US Treasurer Brandon Rich said at the time.
“There is no more iconic portrait for these coins than that of President Donald Trump,” he added.
In late February, the CCAC (Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Coinage), another body that provides opinions on new coins, refused to consider the project to mint a coin with Trump’s portrait.
After the Declaration of Independence in 1776, “no country in the world mints coins that bear the image of a democratically elected leader while he is in office,” CCAC member Donald Scarinci stated at the time.
“Only countries ruled by kings or dictators put images of their leaders on coins,” he commented.
