A video posted on social media has documented the moment an Amazon cargo plane skidded off the runway at Miami International Airport and crashed into several vehicles, killing five people.
The plane was a Boeing 767-300 and, according to Cirium data, was built in 1994. It had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, bound for Miami.
Following the accident, authorities launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. A spokeswoman for the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Hannah Walden, stated that the runways at Miami International Airport are not equipped with the Engineered Material Arrest System (EMAS). EMAS is a special pulverizable concrete material designed to safely stop aircraft that overshoot the end of the runway.
According to The New York Times, the FAA has recommended installing this system at airports for years, but the recommendation is not mandatory. Airports can also use other FAA-approved methods to reduce the risk of planes running off the runway.
Another video posted on social media shows a Boeing 767-300 landing on the runway with its right rear wheel missing the ground. The footage has raised questions online about the plane’s approach speed, but the cause of the accident has not yet been officially determined.
In addition to the five victims, five other people were injured, three of whom are in critical condition.
Second serious accident of Amazon Air
The incident in Miami is the second serious accident in Amazon Air’s history.
In February 2019, a cargo plane flying from Miami to Houston crashed into a swampy area in Texas, killing three people on board. The investigation linked that accident to human error, after the co-pilot became disoriented during the flight and sent the plane into a steep descent.

Amazon Air, Amazon’s cargo airline, is an important part of the company’s global distribution network. It operates more than 250 flights a day and has about 100 chartered aircraft, which transport packages between dozens of airports in Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa.
The company was founded in 2015 under the name “Prime Air” and was renamed “Amazon Air” in 2017, to distinguish it from Amazon’s autonomous drone delivery service, which still bears the name “Prime Air.”
Sunday’s accident brought into focus another tragic event at Miami International Airport.
In August 1997, a Fine Air cargo plane crashed during takeoff, skidding across an open area and onto a busy highway. Five people, including the driver, were killed in the accident.
