Moreno Violetto, accused of the murder of former Albanian prison guard Fatos Cenaj , has admitted to the crime during the first session of the trial.
Violetto appeared on Wednesday, September 30, before the Assizes court, where he stated that he regretted what he had done.
“I don’t know what went through my mind at that moment. I regret what I did,” he is reported to have said before the court.
After his statement, the accused handed over a check for 5 thousand euros, in favor of the victim’s family members, who have appeared as civil parties in the process.
The incident occurred on June 8, 2025, in the Casoni area of Fontaniva, Italy. Fatos Cenaj, a former prison guard of Albanian origin, was found lying in serious condition next to his bicycle on a village road.
At first, it was suspected that he had suffered an accident. But after being rushed to the Padua hospital, doctors discovered that he had been shot in the head with a gunshot.
Cenaj remained in serious condition for three days before passing away.
The carabinieri’s investigation lasted about six months. Violetto, who had no criminal record and lived near the victim’s house, was arrested after investigators gathered evidence linking him to the incident.
Cenaj had been shot behind the ear from a distance of less than 10 meters.
The weapon used in the crime has not been found. Investigators suspect that it may have been homemade by Violetto. The bullet that caused Cenaj’s death has not been found either.
According to investigations, the cause of the conflict is suspected to have been disputes regarding property boundaries.
