A 36-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment in Vergiate, in the province of Varese, Italy, with several stab wounds. Her partner, Marco Panichi, 53, is suspected of the murder, and has surrendered to the Carabinieri.
According to preliminary data, the 53-year-old presented himself in the late evening hours at a carabinieri barracks in Avezzano, where he declared that he had killed his partner after a conflict between them.
After this notification, the officers went to the address he indicated. Inside the apartment, on the bedroom floor, they found the woman’s lifeless body. The preliminary examination by the forensic doctor showed that the victim had several wounds on her body and neck. A kitchen knife, suspected to have been used in the incident, was also found next to her.
During questioning, Panichi claimed he had acted in self-defense, stating that his partner had attacked him with a knife.
His lawyer also supported this version, claiming that the conflict had started because of his wife’s jealousy. According to the defense, the 53-year-old had suffered injuries during the collision, including a deep wound on his left arm and injuries to his right hand.
The lawyer also stated that his client had initially left the scene, out of fear, and gone to his father’s house, before deciding to surrender to the police. These claims remain to be verified by investigators.
Panichi has been detained by judicial authorities in Avezzano, in collaboration with the Busto Arsizio Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating the circumstances of the murder.
Meanwhile, the body of the 36-year-old has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Pavia, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact causes and circumstances of death. Investigations are continuing to reconstruct the dynamics of the event and to verify the suspect’s version.
