New details have emerged from the investigation into the murder of 38-year-old Scottish woman Elizabeth, whose body was found inside a suitcase in the Kypseli area of Athens in July.
The investigation focuses on 26-year-old Afghan Sharif Ahmadzai, who is in custody, while the testimony of his wife, Alaina, is being considered an important element in solving the case. According to British media, Alaina and her husband had met Elizabeth while volunteering at an organization that helped refugees in Athens. She described the 38-year-old as a kind and good-natured person.
The last time they met was on July 12, a few days before investigators suspect Elizabeth was murdered. According to Alaina’s testimony, Elizabeth invited them for a walk and Ahmadzai then joined them. After Alaina left, the two continued to communicate.
Elizabeth had asked the 26-year-old to help her distribute Bibles. On July 15, Alaina saw a message from Elizabeth to her husband, thanking him for his willingness to accompany her. That same night, Alaina woke up to find that her husband had left the apartment without telling her. She checked his phone location and saw that it was near the apartment on Rethymno Street, where Elizabeth was suspected to have been.
When asked why he was there, Ahmadzai told him he had gone to watch a football match at a cafe and had only entered the apartment to use the bathroom. According to the investigation, the suspect himself admitted to going to Elizabeth’s apartment on July 15.
Initially, Alaina accepted her husband’s explanation and had no doubts. She says that he continued his life normally in the following weeks. But the situation changed after the news of the discovery of a woman’s body inside a suitcase in Kypseli was published in the media.
On July 29, Alaina attempted to contact Elizabeth via text messages, but the responses she received seemed unusual. According to her, the writing style and use of emojis did not match Elizabeth’s style.
After the victim was officially identified, Alaina left her apartment out of fear and spent the night outside the house.
Investigations into the murder continue, as Greek authorities attempt to fully elucidate the circumstances of the incident and the role of 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai in this crime.
