“For me, the two most complex, but also most complete political figures of these 3-4 decades in Albanian lands, remain Ibrahim Rugova and Sali Berisha. Two personalities completely different in style, temperament and way of exercising leadership, but who achieved something that very few Albanian politicians have achieved: becoming bigger than the parties they led.”
“Rugova died before his party died. Berisha, paradoxically, risks experiencing the opposite: seeing the party weaken while he is still there”, this was the statement made the day before by journalist Çim Peka, who, although close to the leader of the DP, Sali Berisha, criticized the latter, asking him for a move to save the party.
Peka’s statement, and especially the comparison he made of Berisha with Ibrahim Rugova, has brought the reaction of Albanian-American activist Evi Kokalari, who has once again attacked the journalist through a post on social media.
Kokalari calls the comparison a result of “ignorance” and a lack of information on Albanian political developments. According to her, Rugova and Berisha cannot be placed on the same plane, arguing that Rugova fought politically for an independent Kosovo, while Berisha, according to her, had a completely different role in Albania’s political history.
The activist goes further, claiming that Peka’s recent criticisms of Berisha are not accidental and that the goal is to push the leader of the DP towards leaving politics, to pave the way for Argita Malltez.
