TIRANA – A meeting held in recent days between Prime Minister Edi Rama and Alex Soros is raising questions about several political and economic developments in Albania.
Timoni.al’s sources close to the Prime Minister’s Office claim that the issue of the former mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, was also discussed during the meeting.
According to these sources, Soros has asked Rama to consider the possibility of releasing Veliaj, arguing that his return to the political scene would not pose a threat to the prime minister’s power or to the Socialist Party.
According to the same sources, during the discussion on the Erion Veliaj case, Edi Rama responded to Alex Soros that he does not interfere in justice matters and that decisions related to Veliaj belong to the justice institutions. Rama, according to the sources, made it clear that the government and he personally cannot interfere in a judicial process.
Another issue that, according to the same sources, was raised at the meeting is related to the tourism development project in Zvërnec, linked to Jared Kushner’s company and the Trump family.
Sources claim that Alex Soros has asked Rama to review the project and consider the possibility of removing Ivanka Trump from the project, proposing an alternative with another investor, whom Soros would bring to Albania.
But, according to Timoni.al sources, Rama has opposed this request, arguing that the Zvërnec project cannot be returned later and that its process cannot be changed in this way.
As of the publication of this report, there has been no public confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office, Alex Soros, or the parties involved regarding these claims.
The Zvërnec project is currently one of the most discussed investments in Albania. Recent international reports have raised questions about land ownership issues, while the resort development has also sparked protests and public debate.
