New details have emerged about the murder of 44-year-old Albanian Esma Meço in the Rhodope area of Greece, where her husband, 53-year-old Bujar Meço, is suspected of stabbing her inside their apartment.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, August 26, in the Dialambi neighborhood. According to reports, the 44-year-old woman was hit in the neck, while the couple’s 16-year-old daughter was also in the apartment.
After the attack, the 19-year-old son picked up his injured mother and rushed her to Komotini Hospital. Despite the doctors’ efforts, she could not survive.
Two knives were seized at the scene. Meanwhile, the 53-year-old is suspected of attempting suicide after the crime. He had consumed an unknown amount of liquid, suspected to be pesticide or oil, and had inflicted superficial wounds to his abdomen with a knife. He is currently in hospital, under police supervision, and is out of danger.
Esma had decided to separate.
An important detail in the investigation has been made public by the victim’s lawyer, Evangelia Kola. According to her, Esma had made the decision to divorce her husband and had contacted the lawyer just the day before the murder.
The meeting to start the divorce proceedings was scheduled for Thursday, but the 44-year-old was unable to attend.
The lawyer stated that Esma had experienced domestic violence for years and had previously reported cases of violence, including an episode in Crete in 2022 and another in Komotini.
Investigators are examining the possibility that jealousy and the decision to divorce were among the causes that led to the fatal conflict.
Esma was working seasonally in Thasos and had returned to Dialambi to be near her daughter, who was celebrating her 16th birthday on August 26. On the very day of the daughter’s birthday, the family celebration turned into a tragedy.
The 53-year-old is facing criminal charges of murder, domestic violence and weapons violations. The investigation is expected to shed light on the minutes leading up to the attack and the exact dynamics of the crime.
