An important date is approaching for Albanian families in the United States who have relatives enrolled in Medicare. The annual Open Enrollment period begins October 15 and ends December 7, 2026, giving beneficiaries an opportunity to review and change their health and prescription drug coverage for the coming year. Changes made during this period generally take effect on January 1, 2027. Medicare
The enrollment window comes after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services published its outlook for 2027 plans on September 28. CMS projects that the weighted average monthly Medicare Advantage plan premium will decrease from $14.37 in 2026 to $12 in 2027. This is a national average for those plans, rather than the total cost of Medicare or a guaranteed price for every beneficiary. CMS
For stand-alone Part D prescription drug plans, CMS projects an average monthly premium of $36, compared with $35.09 in 2026. Individual plans can differ, so these averages do not establish what a particular person will pay. The agency encourages beneficiaries to compare their available options before deciding whether to keep or change coverage. CMS
For Albanian households helping parents or other relatives manage Medicare, the review involves more than the monthly premium. Plans can change their coverage, costs, and networks of healthcare providers and pharmacies each year. A plan that worked well in 2026 may have different conditions in 2027, making it important to check whether it still meets the beneficiary’s needs. CMS
Two documents deserve particular attention: the Annual Notice of Change and the Evidence of Coverage sent by the current plan. CMS advises members to review these materials to understand the following year’s terms. If the existing plan remains available and continues to meet their needs, beneficiaries generally do not need to take action to keep it. CMS
During Open Enrollment, beneficiaries can switch Medicare Advantage plans, change eligible prescription drug coverage, or move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. However, switching back to Original Medicare may require arranging a separate drug plan. Anyone considering Medicare Supplement Insurance, known as Medigap, should also check the rules governing when they can obtain that coverage. Medicare
Official comparisons are available through Medicare.gov’s Plan Finder. Beneficiaries can also call 1-800-MEDICARE for help comparing plans and costs. The upcoming window gives families time to examine the documents, compare coverage and make a decision before December 7.
