A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the southern coast of Italy in the early hours of this morning, causing panic and alarm among thousands of citizens.
The tremors were recorded at exactly 00:12, finding the residents asleep. Despite the high strength of the tremor, an important geological detail averted a potential tragedy.
Where was the epicenter and how deep did it hit?
According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy (INGV) and the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 17 kilometers southwest of Scarcelli and about 41 kilometers from the city of Cosenza, in the Calabria region.
The saving grace of this earthquake was its unusual depth. The hypocenter was recorded about 250 kilometers (over 153 miles) below the earth’s surface. This great depth significantly mitigated the destructive effect on the surface, but caused the seismic waves to spread rapidly over an extremely wide geography.

Earthquake map: From Naples to Sicily
Due to the large spread of the waves, the earthquake was felt across most of Southern Italy, alarming several regions:
Calabria and Campania: The tremors shook the Calabrian coast and were clearly felt in the Naples area, especially in the Vesuvius region, in the city center and in the volcanic area of Flegrei (Campi Flegrei).
Sicily: Numerous reports came from citizens in Messina, Palermo and Catania. Residents reported a pronounced shaking that lasted for several seconds.
Other regions: The earthquake was also felt in Basilicata, Puglia, and according to some media reports, light tremors were perceived as far as the coast of Albania.
Is there damage? Current situation
In many cities, citizens frightened by the midnight tremors took to the streets and loaded emergency telephone lines, requesting information from Civil Protection and Firefighters.
The Calabrian Civil Protection Operations Center immediately contacted the mayors of the municipalities closest to the epicenter, such as Lamezia Terme, Cetraro and Amantea. So far, the good news is that authorities confirm that the situation remains calm and there are no reports of injuries or building collapses.
