Has Berisha’s “non grata” status been lifted? The US State Department is responding

The US State Department has reacted to Top News’ statement by the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, that he has been removed from non grata status.

“The Department of State has waived certain designations/sanctions under Section 7031(c) imposed by the previous administration because granting these waivers serves a national interest,” a State Department spokesperson told Top News.

But what is a waiver?

Where the term means that the US Department of State has decided to lift or temporarily suspend the effect of certain sanctions/restrictions, even though they were previously imposed under section 7031(c), because it considers that this serves the US national interest.

Section 7031(c) is used by the US to impose entry (visa) bans on foreign officials and their family members when there is credible information about serious corruption or serious human rights violations.

In this case: “waivers” = exceptions to sanctions/restrictions, not their complete cancellation;

the current administration may have decided that some persons affected by 7031(c) should be readmitted for diplomatic, security, negotiation, or strategic U.S. interests reasons;

The phrase “national interest” is the legal basis used to justify this exception.

In simpler words: some consequences of sanctions have been “forgiven” or temporarily mitigated, because the US thinks it is politically or strategically advantageous./voxnews.al
