According to a report by Axios, citing two US officials, Trump called Netanyahu “crazy” and accused him of a lack of gratitude, while objecting to Israel’s plans to carry out attacks in Beirut.

The call took place just hours after Iran warned that Israel’s continued military actions in Lebanon could lead to the failure of ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

According to the cited sources, Trump reminded Netanyahu of the support he has given him over the years, claiming that it has played an important role in his political survival, including during the corruption trials that the Israeli prime minister has faced.

One of the US officials said that Trump addressed Netanyahu with the words: “You are completely crazy. You would be in prison if it weren’t for me. I am trying to save you. Now everyone hates you. Everyone hates Israel because of this.”

Another source said the US president was “extremely angry” and at one point shouted at his Israeli counterpart: “What the hell are you doing?”

Concerns about international isolation

According to US officials, Trump acknowledged that Hezbollah has continued attacks against Israel and that Israel has the right to defend itself. However, he assessed that Netanyahu has gone too far with the escalation of military operations in recent days.

The US administration has expressed particular concern about threats related to the bombing of Beirut, as well as the expansion of ground operations in southern Lebanon.

US officials have also raised concerns about the high number of civilian casualties and attacks on buildings targeting specific Hezbollah commanders.
