The medieval town of Naro, in southwest Sicily, is offering buyers from Italy and abroad the chance to buy a home for just 1 euro.
The initiative aims to revitalize the historic center, bring abandoned buildings back into use, combat depopulation, and promote tourism.
The program has been approved by local authorities and applications can be made through the online platform “Case 1 Euro Naro”.
But, of course, 1 euro is not the real cost of the house.
The properties offered require reconstruction and buyers must cover the costs of notary, registration and cadastral taxes.
They must also pay for the design, restoration work, and adaptation of the building to safety standards, urban planning regulations, and landscape protection regulations.
Naro, in the province of Agrigento, is known for its Baroque architecture, the Chiaramontano Castle, the historic center, and the inland landscapes of Sicily. The city also preserves the Porta d’Oro, a medieval gate dating back to the 13th century.
So the offer may seem like a dream: a house in Sicily for 1 euro. But to turn it into a real home, buyers must be willing to invest much more.
