She fell ill on the Greece-Italy ferry, the emergency surgery that saved the life of the Albanian woman

A complex rescue operation at sea took place this morning for a 49-year-old woman of Albanian origin, who suffered a cerebral ischemia while on board a ferry traveling from Greece to Ancona.

The passenger was evacuated by Coast Guard helicopter and urgently transported to Chieti hospital.

The alarm was raised at around 10:00, when the operations room of the Pescara Maritime Directorate received a request for medical evacuation from the Ro-Pax ferry ‘Superfast IX’, which at that moment was located about 68 nautical miles off the coast of Pescara.

The International Center for Radiomedicine (CIRM), after assessing the situation, recommended the immediate transfer of the patient to land. The operations room ordered the ferry to change course and sail at maximum speed towards Pescara, while simultaneously sending the patrol boat CP 828 to sea and sending the Nemo 20 helicopter of the Third Helicopter Section of the Coast Guard to take off in the coastal city.

After the helicopter arrived near the ferry in the open sea, operations began to transfer the woman aboard via the helicopter’s crane, with the intervention of a maritime air rescue specialist.

At around 11:40, the passenger, who was in stable condition but needed ongoing specialized treatment, was evacuated and taken aboard the helicopter.

The helicopter then headed to the Chieti hospital, where at around 12:00, the 49-year-old woman was handed over to medical staff, ANSA writes .
