Following Donald Trump’s latest post on the social network “TruthSocial”, a reaction was made by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who considered the American president’s attacks to be meaningless.
She has argued that her popularity does not depend on her relationship with Trump, but on her ability to defend Italy’s national interest.
“This is also what I did regarding the American military bases in Italy. Their use is regulated by agreements that we have always respected, and that cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister,” Meloni writes, among other things.
Full reaction:
President Trump,
these constant and unprovoked attacks are pointless. As for my popularity, being your friend certainly hasn’t helped, nor does it depend on my relationship with you. My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy’s national interest, and that is exactly what I have always done.
This is also what I did regarding the American military bases in Italy. Their use is governed by agreements that we have always respected, and which cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister.
Italy remains a sovereign nation.
However, my popularity is none of your business. I suggest you focus on yours.
While she wrote: “My response to the latest post by Donald Trump that concerns me. But I will not return to this topic, because I still believe in the unity of the West and I do not think this is a performance at the height of our duty.”
