The Chief of the Saranda Police Station, GĂ«zim Bashllari, was arrested this Friday as part of an operation conducted by the Police Supervision Agency. Two police specialists and the officer with the initials AI were also arrested with him.
Preliminary sources indicate that other arrests are expected.
The operation has been extended to Saranda, Ksamil and surrounding areas, following suspicions of the involvement or tolerance of unauthorized construction on the coastline, one of the most frequented tourist areas in the south of the country.
According to investigative sources, AMP is verifying recent cases of illegal construction and the role that local police officers may have played in failing to act against them.
A day earlier, Saranda Police arrested 8 people suspected of carrying out illegal construction near the coast. The owner of the land where the works were taking place is also wanted.
Among the names involved in the investigation is Blerim Tafciu, a crime boss, who is wanted.
