NATO guarantees: Withdrawal of US forces from Europe does not affect our defense capabilities

NATO’s top commander in Europe, American General Alexus Grynkewich, stated that the withdrawal of some American troops from Europe will not affect the alliance’s defense capabilities.

The statement comes after US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw around 5,000 US troops from Germany.

According to NATO, the reduction of US forces will be implemented within the next 6 to 12 months and affects about 15% of the 36,000 US soldiers currently stationed in Germany.

General Grynkewich emphasized that European allies are increasing their military capabilities and this allows the US to shift some of its forces to other global priorities.

He added that the process will be gradual and will depend on the ability of European NATO countries to strengthen defense, according to the commitments made at the alliance summit in The Hague to increase military spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product.

The American general also stated that any potential NATO mission in the Strait of Hormuz would require a political decision from the alliance’s member countries.
