New Albania, like the protesters, has found the legal space for Rama and Berisha to say goodbye to the post of Prime Minister

Protesters gathered in Tirana have made public a set of demands that, according to them, aim to radically change the political system in the country. Under the slogan “New Albania”, they demand the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the entire government cabinet, as well as the establishment of a transitional technical government with a 12-month mandate.

One of the main proposals is related to the drafting of a new Constitution, which would be subject to a popular referendum. According to the protesters, the constitutional reform should include changes to the Electoral Code, to the rules for financing political parties and organizations, as well as establishing a maximum limit of two terms for the post of prime minister during an individual’s entire political life.

According to them, such a change would eliminate the possibility of the same political figures returning to the head of government repeatedly. In practice, such a restriction would exclude both Edi Rama and Sali Berisha from the possibility of holding the post of prime minister again, as both are considered to have exceeded the proposed limit of two terms.

Protesters present this as one of the main pillars of their vision for a “New Albania,” arguing that mandatory rotation in the leadership of the government would bring more political competition and pave the way for new figures to lead the country.

Protesters demand:

1️⃣ The non-negotiable resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the entire government cabinet.

2️⃣ The creation of a transitional technical government, which will be non-partisan and will have a clear 12-month mandate.

3️⃣ Drafting a new Constitution that guarantees the full equality of citizens before the law, which will be approved by popular referendum.

This constitutional reform provides for:

– Amendment of the Electoral Code;

– Amending the law on financing political parties and organizations;

– Limiting the Prime Minister’s term to no more than two terms (full or partial) during an individual’s entire political life.

4️⃣ Not giving up on the initial economic and environmental requirements, which urgently require:

– Cancellation of the amendments to the law on “Protected Areas”;

– Cancellation of amendments to the law on “Cultural Heritage”;

– Repeal of the legal package known as the “Mountains Package”;

– Abolition of the status and legal framework for “Strategic Investments”.

5️⃣ A new social contract between citizens and the state, which will be drafted through consultations with intellectuals, technical experts and non-partisan citizens proposed directly from the protest square.
