Tragic/ 40-year-old falls off boat during sea trip, dies in front of three children
A dinghy ride on a beach in Malia, on the island of Crete, ended in tragedy on Wednesday afternoon, after a 40-year-old tourist from the Netherlands died by drowning, in front of three minor children.
According to Greek media, two women from the Netherlands had rented a dinghy in the Klotzani sea area, in the municipality of Hersonissos, along with three children. For reasons that have not yet been clarified, one of the women ended up in the sea.
The moments that followed were dramatic, as two children under the age of 5 and a teenager were on the raft, who asked for help. Jet skis from nearby businesses offering marine activities immediately arrived at the scene to assist in the rescue operation.
The other tourist managed to pull the 40-year-old woman out of the water, but she was lifeless. An ambulance also arrived at the beach, but doctors only declared her dead.
According to Greek Coast Guard sources, no driving license is required to rent motorized dinghies up to 30 horsepower, so many tourists use them for sea excursions.
Greek authorities have launched investigations to uncover the exact circumstances in which the 40-year-old woman fell into the water and lost her life.
