A family tragedy has shaken Izmir, where a 56-year-old woman and her 4-year-old grandson lost their lives after a fire engulfed the family’s apartment.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon in the Çiğli area. According to preliminary information, Rezan Korkmaz had initially managed to get her other nephew, 2-year-old Mert, out of the apartment.
However, the 56-year-old returned to the burning apartment in an attempt to save her 4-year-old grandson, Yigit. Both were found lifeless by firefighters.
The grandmother’s body was found next to the child, raising suspicions that she had tried to protect her grandson during the fire. The 59-year-old grandfather, Bayram Korkmaz, managed to escape by jumping out of the apartment window. He suffered burns to his hands and back and, after receiving medical treatment at the hospital, was taken to the apartment.
Four-year-old Yigit was expected to celebrate his birthday on August 23. After the completion of autopsies, the bodies of the grandmother and grandson were handed over to their families. Meanwhile, Turkish authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire and the circumstances of the tragedy.
