The former president of the Vlora Court, Skënder Haluci, has passed away suddenly at the age of 64.
Haluc passed away this morning in the mountains of Tropoja, where he was on vacation with his family.
Journalist and writer Mitro Çela has brought to attention an unusual story from Haluc’s life.
According to Çela’s account, Skënder Haluci was arrested in Tropoja, on charges of planning to assassinate the then former president of Albania, Ramiz Alina.
Çela says that after the trial, Haluc was initially sentenced to be shot. For two days, he stood with a diving suit on his head, while the final verdict was awaited.
Then came the pardon of the sentence. Instead of execution, Haluc was given a sentence of 25 years in prison.
During his time in Burrel prison, he experienced another great family pain, after his father died, at only 46 years old.
After being released from prison, Haluc returned to social life and later became a judge.
But his story would take an extraordinary turn in 1997.
At that time, former President Ramiz Alia faced justice and, through a draw, Skënder Haluci was included in the panel that would consider his case.
According to Mitro Çela’s account, Haluci decided to resign from the panel.
